My success story with the help of a TEP
I have completed my first TEP, some 6 months ago now, but still look back on the experience with the fondest of memories. I worked as a receptionist at a busy, local hospital every Tuesday 8-4, performing the duties of a telephonist, dealing with the public, doctors and nurses and answering numerous enquiries.
As this was my first TEP since becoming a member at Horizon House, and I was again entering the workplace, after an absence of some fifteen years, I do remember my first day with a little trepidation. An enormous benefit was the fact that I was supported for six weeks until I had the confidence to man the desk successfully on my own. A few nerves, I think, are good to help us through our day!
Looking back on the whole TEP experience I believe there are numerous advantages to be gained from any job of work, for the first time or even second or third. On a professional level just the fact that you are working, being paid a wage and gaining some independence is incentive enough, but also on a personal level, I think working is so so valuable. I have the knowledge that I did a competent job to the best of my ability. I was helpful and resourceful when necessary, able to act in a professional manner, but also caring and considerate when such qualities were required. I can bask in the belief that I was able to communicate with everyone and have the qualities needed for a receptionist and will be accepted as part of a team.
As a result of working again I would say that my confidence has soared, which really makes life a whole lot easier, in all aspects, especially family relationships and friends. For any member at Horizon House who has an opportunity of holding down a TEP will, undoubtedly, experience a journey of self-knowledge and challenges, which can only be a positive step in the right direction.
